After nearly three decades in the making, Bill S-10, the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement Act, a self-government agreement between Canada, the Anishinabek Nation and five First Nations that ratified the Agreement, received Royal Assent in the House of Commons on June 23, 2022.
With Royal Assent and the law officially in force, the nine signatory First Nations’ leadership are implementing the act in their communities. The enactment and the essential resource allocation was carried out in October 2022 allowing the communities to move forward to full self-governance.
