Anishinaabe Governance is\u2026 many things. <\/strong>The basic question we can ask is:\u00a0 \u201cWhat is Governance?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The definition of Governance according to Webster\u2019s dictionary:
\nGovernance: the act or process of governing or overseeing the control and direction of something (such as a country or an organization).<\/em><\/p>\n

The Institute on Governance defines it really well and simply:
\nGovernance is how society or groups within it, organize to make decisions.\u00a0 Governance determines who has power, who makes decisions, how other players make their voice heard and how account is rendered.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

For our purposes, we will keep the definition simple:
\nGovernance means how governments or organizations make decisions.
\n<\/em><\/strong>So \u201cAnishinaabe Governance\u201d means how Anishinabek Nation First Nations make decisions in their communities and as the collective Anishinabek Nation.<\/p>\n


\nThe Four Areas
\n<\/strong>The four areas of Anishinaabe Governance we will be discussing during this community knowledge dialogue are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Leadership Selection \u2013 Determining how we select our leadership<\/li>\n
  2. Citizenship \u2013 Determining who our citizens are<\/li>\n
  3. Language and Culture \u2013 Creating laws to preserve our Anishinabek way of life<\/li>\n
  4. Operation & Management of Government \u2013 Determining how we will conduct our affairs, provide programs and services, and fund our operations. This includes how we allocate, spend our money, and are accountable to our citizens.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u00a0<\/p>\n

    At the same time, the Anishinabek Nation is also working on these areas of Governance:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Education \u2013 Anishinabek Education System\/Kinoomaadziwin Education Body operates our own Education system;<\/li>\n
    • Child Well-Being \u2013 Anishinabek Nation Child Well-Being Law. This determine how we protect and take care of our children<\/li>\n
    • Health and Wellness \u2013 Anishinabek Nation Health Transformation. This process will determine how we provide health programs and services and ensure the well-being of our people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      \u00a0<\/p>\n

      Other areas of governance that we may explore in the future include:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Justice \u2013 How we administer and enforce our laws<\/li>\n
      • Policing \u2013 How we protect and secure our citizens and their property<\/li>\n
      • Lands Management \u2013 How we manage our lands and interest on our territory<\/li>\n
      • Environment \u2013 How we protect Mother Earth, the lands and water and all of Creation<\/li>\n
      • Business and Economic Development \u2013 How we establish our own economy and wealth creation<\/li>\n
      • Housing \u2013 How we build and allocate safe, adequate and affordable housing<\/li>\n
      • Intergovernmental Affairs \u2013 How we interact with other governments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
