The four areas of Anishinabek Governance we will be discussing during this community knowledge dialogue are:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
    \n
  1. Leadership Selection<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Determining how we select our leadership<\/li>\n
  2. Ci<\/strong>tizenship<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Determining who our citizens are<\/li>\n
  3. Culture & Language<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Creating laws to preserve our Anishinabek way of life<\/li>\n
  4. Management & Operation of Government<\/strong> \u2013 Determining how we will conduct our affairs, provide programs and services, and fund our operations. This includes how we allocate, spend our money, and are accountable to our citizens.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u00a0<\/p>\n

    Why are we only focusing on these Four Areas of Governance?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

    Governance is so broad.\u00a0 There are far too many areas to cover at once.\u00a0 But we have to start somewhere.\u00a0 When we start with these Four Areas, we are taking a cautious and gradual approach to developing our own Anishinaabe Governance.<\/p>\n

    Leadership Selection<\/strong> \u2013 The most basic component of governance is leadership selection.\u00a0 So that is a good place to start.\u00a0 When we can create our own laws on leadership selection, we can slowly transition out of the Indian Act which has run our lives for 144 years.<\/p>\n

    Citizenship<\/strong> \u2013 The most fundamental area of governance is to determine Anishinabek citizenship.\u00a0 Under our Chi-Naaknigewin (Constitution) we refer to our citizens as E\u2019Dbendaagzijig, or \u201cthose who belong\u201d.\u00a0 It is important that we determine our own citizens for ourselves.\u00a0 Right now, the Indian Act defines \u201cStatus Indians\u201d which is completely controlled by the federal government.<\/p>\n

    Language and Culture<\/strong> \u2013 The Indian Act is complete silent on language and culture.\u00a0 Yet, the protection of our ways of life, especially Anishinaabemowin (Anishinaabe language), Algonquin Anishinaabemowin and Lene Lenape is incredibly important to our elders, our language keepers and all our people.\u00a0 Enabling the protection, use and education of our language in our system of governance must continue to be a priority.<\/p>\n

    Operation & Management of Government<\/strong> \u2013 Another basic part of governance is to determine and define the function of government.\u00a0 These systems are really the foundation to delivering all necessary programs and services including health and well-being, housing, child care and looking after our Elders.\u00a0 The function of government can also provide us with tools to maintain accountability of how funds are spent and how decision are made.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/p>\n

    What is the future of Anishinaabe Governance?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

    The promise, hope and future of Anishinaabe Governance is practically limitless.\u00a0 When we are able to hold our own elections, determine our own citizens, have a strong language and culture, and have a functioning government, we can do anything.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/p>\n

    So what is next?\u00a0 That\u2019s not for anyone else to decide except YOU, the Anishinabek Nation citizens.<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n

    \u00a0<\/p>\n

    At the same time, the Anishinabek Nation is also working on these areas of Governance:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
      \n
    • Education<\/strong> \u2013 Anishinabek Education System\/Kinoomaadziwin Education Body operates our own Education system;<\/li>\n
    • Child Well-Being<\/strong> \u2013 Anishinabek Nation Child Well-Being Law. This determine how we protect and take care of our children<\/li>\n
    • Health and Wellness<\/strong> \u2013 Anishinabek Nation Health Transformation. This process will determine how we provide health programs and services and ensure the well-being of our people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      \u00a0<\/p>\n

      Other areas of governance that we may explore in the future include:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
        \n
      • Justice<\/strong> \u2013 How we administer and enforce our laws<\/li>\n
      • Policing<\/strong> \u2013 How we protect and secure our citizens and their property<\/li>\n
      • Lands Management<\/strong> \u2013 How we manage our lands and interest on our territory<\/li>\n
      • Environment<\/strong> \u2013 How we protect Mother Earth, the lands and water and all of Creation<\/li>\n
      • Business & Economic Development<\/strong> \u2013 How we establish our own economy and wealth creation<\/li>\n
      • Housing<\/strong> \u2013 How we build and allocate safe, adequate and affordable housing<\/li>\n
      • Intergovernmental Affairs<\/strong> \u2013 How we interact with other governments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
