{"id":1337,"date":"2020-10-17T19:06:55","date_gmt":"2020-10-17T19:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bmaakonigan.ca\/website_681dad08\/?page_id=1337"},"modified":"2022-01-19T20:16:30","modified_gmt":"2022-01-19T20:16:30","slug":"language-culture","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bmaakonigan.ca\/website_681dad08\/language-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Language &#038; Culture (in detail)"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><p><strong>Anishinaabe Governance is\u2026 protecting our Culture and learning our Language.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The State of Language and Culture\u2026 currently.<br>\n<\/strong>The Good:\u00a0 In the past 50 years, never before have we seen such a resurgence in Anishinaabe culture.\u00a0 It began in the 60s with the young people finding out who they were.\u00a0 Today, they are raising their children and grandchildren using Anishinaabe values.\u00a0 So many a finding their ways back to traditional societies or living a lifestyle involving culture, spirituality and ceremony.\u00a0 Most of our First Nations have an annual jiingtamook (pow-wow or traditional gathering).\u00a0 There is a lot to celebrate.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cNot-so-Good\u201d:\u00a0 Studies have shown that the state of Anishinaabemowin (Anishinaabe language) continues to decline.\u00a0 We are losing fluent speakers at an incredible rate as our Elders pass on to the Spirit World.\u00a0 Although we are attempting to teach our children and citizens, those efforts are not producing fluent speakers.\u00a0 There are only a handful of Anishinabek First Nations that have a sustainable number of speakers to maintain the language.<\/p>\n<p>Something has to be done.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the Indian Act remains completely silent on language and culture.\u00a0 The federal government does not provide any core funding specifically to address the state of language and culture in our communities.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br>\nThe promise, hope and future of Anishinabek Language and Culture<br>\n<\/strong>Anishinabek First Nations have said what our Elders have said all along \u2013 we must make the preservation, use, and learning of our language and culture a priority.\u00a0 We must take action now.<\/p>\n<p>Anishinaabe Governance is\u2026 the opportunity to take action on language and culture.\u00a0 Under an Anishinaabe Governance system, we can create laws that will protect our language.\u00a0 We can take measures to make Anishinaabemowin the official language of our nation.\u00a0 Most importantly, for the first time in history, we can invest in language by training and hiring new teachers, making language learning mandatory in our school system, and use the language in our homes and places of work.<\/p>\n<p>We can begin to use the language every day, to speak, think and dream in beautiful Anishinaabemowin.<\/p>\n<p>Anishinaabe Governance is\u2026 strengthening our language and cultural knowledge today and securing it for the next seven generations.<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anishinaabe Governance is\u2026 protecting our Culture and learning our Language.
